Hey Cowgirl!
We are so excited that you are interested in joining the Sky High Angels® Rodeo Drill Team! But, before you decide to try out, there are a few things you should know: The Sky High Angels® were originally formed in the spring of 2005. A performance team of 12 riders was created to perform at local rodeos and functions so that we could be a part of the sport that we all love so much! In the 2005 season, we performed at three different rodeos and one Wild West show, rode in three different parades, and assisted many local rodeos with the display of sponsor flags and grand entries. We have traveled as far as Dewey, Oklahoma, and as close as Siloam Springs, Arkansas to perform and carry sponsor flags.
Now a little about our routines…They are fast paced and difficult. They require all riders to carry a flag throughout the entire performance. Learning the routine requires dedication, patience, excellent riding skills, an exceptional horse, and a LOT of hard work! Typically, practices are scheduled on Friday or Sunday evenings, but other days may be scheduled when necessary.
As we mentioned above, it takes an exceptional horse to be able to handle our routines. Many times the horses are expected to run at full speed and immediately stop and stand still. The horses must be able to handle the excitement and the crowd noise, carry a flag, and run two-by-two with another horse. No studs allowed.
Of course, all of this takes money. We have held a dance and chili dinner to raise money that we need for our costumes, tack, and etc. We have also held garage sales, ran concession stands, and done catering for hire. Even so, most of our traveling expenses with respect to fuel, food, and accommodations are generally out-of-pocket.
Also, please keep in mind that these try-outs are for available ALTERNATE positions. Our performance riders are chosen on seniority basis unless otherwise voted on by the team. However, you will be filling some VERY important shoes. Your job is potentially the most difficult because you will be filling in for absent performance riders during practices and performances. Therefore, you will have to know ALL of the positions instead of JUST ONE. You will also be helping us behind the scenes by handing out flags, water, and etc. You will also assist with carrying sponsor flags in grand entries and parades when needed.
Normally, the qualifying age to begin trying out with The Sky High Angels® is 14, however, we do make exceptions based on the maturity and riding level of younger riders.
Even though this team takes a lot of time, teamwork, dedication, (and sometimes blood, sweat, and tears!) we cannot stress enough how much FUN it is! We have made many new friends and have been able to share our passion for horses and riding with the other members of our team. We are a very close knit group and TROUBLE MAKERS ARE NOT TOLERATED! We hope that you decide to try-out and become a part of our group and wish you THE BEST OF LUCK!Sincerely,
The Sky High Angels
